Quad bikes
Six listings on this site put you on a quad in the desert behind the town, and they are far more alike than their fares suggest. The ride itself is a convoy on a flat gravel plain with a lead guide and a sweep at the back, the camel is a short one, and the difference between the cheapest booking here and the highest of the six is mostly the length of the run, whether a buggy is included, and whether the evening ends with dinner and stargazing in a Bedouin camp. What actually decides the day is the hour you leave. A sunrise departure is a cool, quiet run with barely any dust; an afternoon one ends with the light going flat and orange over the hills; a midday one is the hottest thing you will do all week. This page sorts the six by hour, by length and by what the listing itself says is in the fare.

Quick answer
The short answer. Book $29. Three hours, quads and ATVs, a camel ride and an optional barbecue, and it carries 3,420 reviews at 4.9 — the best rating in the desert here. If you want the longest version with a buggy as well as a quad, take $41 at four hours with pickup included and a stop in a Bedouin village. If you want the evening with dinner, a show and stargazing, $17 and $16 are built that way. And if you just want the ride and nothing else, $15 is two hours with shared transfers. Free cancellation applies on every tour on this site.
The hour decides it
Three of the six listings say on their own pages that you choose the hour when you book. $15 offers sunrise with breakfast, a daytime run, or sunset with dinner and stargazing. $16 offers the same span, from sunrise with breakfast to sunset with dinner. $17 names sunrise, daytime or evening. That choice is the single most important thing on this page, and it is the one most people skip past on the way to comparing fares.
The sunrise run. You are collected in the dark, the desert is cold enough to want a layer, and the plain is completely still. The advantages are physical rather than romantic: the air is clear, the dust the convoy raises hangs lower, the engines are not fighting the heat, and you are back at the hotel with the whole day still in front of you. If you have one desert booking and one beach day to fit into the same week, this is how you get both.
The daytime run. The hardest of the three, and the one to think twice about in the warm months. There is no shade on the plain, the gravel throws the light back up at you, and a helmet and a face covering are not optional comfort items but the reason the ride is bearable. It is also the quietest option in terms of other convoys, and if you are travelling in the cooler part of the year it is a perfectly good choice.
The sunset run. The most booked version and the one the photographs come from. The light goes long and low across the gravel, the hills behind the town turn the colour people expect from the desert, and then the camp is waiting with dinner. The trade-off is that it is the busiest departure: more vehicles on the same track means more dust in the middle of a convoy, so ask to ride near the front if that matters to you.
One more practical point. Search for tours in Hurghada egypt and the desert listings are the ones that come back at the lowest fares, which makes them look like an afterthought next to a day at sea. They are not. They are short by design, they run twice a day, and they are the only thing here that shows you the country behind the beach.

What the fare buys
The fares here look like a ladder and behave like a menu. What moves them is not the quality of the machine under you, it is how many separate things the operator has to organise around the ride.
The transfer. Every one of the six collects you and returns you, but the listings describe it differently. $15 says shared hotel transfers, which means a minibus doing a circuit of several hotels before it reaches the desert. $41 says pickup included. The difference is twenty or thirty minutes at each end of your afternoon, and it is worth knowing before you book the tightest possible slot on your last day.
The machine. Five of the six are quads. $29 names quads and ATVs, and $41 adds a buggy, which is the two-seat roll-caged thing you sit in rather than sit on. If there are two of you and only one wants to drive, the buggy listing is the one that solves it without anybody riding pillion.
The camel. All six name a camel ride and all of them mean a short one, at the camp rather than across the desert. It is a photograph and five minutes, not transport, and the listings are honest about that: $15 calls it a brief camel ride in its own description.
The food. This is the biggest single line in the price. $17 includes an Oriental dinner, a live show and stargazing. $16 offers breakfast on the sunrise departure or dinner on the evening one. $29 lists the barbecue as an option rather than a given. Read that line specifically, because a dinner you assumed was included and a dinner you pay for at the camp feel very different at the end of a dusty evening.
The extras. A GoPro on $15, the herb and oil demonstration in the Bedouin village on $41, the stargazing on the evening departures. None of it is padding, but you should know which of it you are paying for. And two things nobody quotes: the age and licence conditions for driving a quad are set by the operator on its own listing page, and they are not the same on all six. Read them before you book for a teenager, not after.
The camp
Three of these listings end in a Bedouin camp, and the camp is a bigger part of the evening than the ride is. Understanding what it is stops it being a disappointment.
It is a permanent site out on the plain, set up for visitors, with low seating around a fire, a covered area for eating and a clear patch of sky over the top. Nobody is pretending it is a nomadic encampment that happened to be there. What it gives you is genuinely good: a cooked meal outdoors, sweet tea, a show with drums, and the thing everybody actually came for, which is a sky with nothing in front of it. Hurghada is bright enough at night that the stars over the town are ordinary. Twenty minutes inland they are not, and the listings that name stargazing — $17, $16 and $15 — mean exactly that.
$41 does the daytime version of the same thing: a stop in a Bedouin village with a talk about herbs and natural oils. It is a sales stop as well as a cultural one, which is normal and worth expecting, and the four-hour length gives it room to breathe rather than rushing you back.
People on a package holiday often search for Hurghada optional tours in english, meaning the excursion list the rep reads out at the hotel desk on arrival evening. The desert runs on this site are the same kind of afternoon, booked online instead, with the fare, the length, the rating and the review count visible before you decide.
A note on riding alone. Private departures do exist on this site, but private tours in Hurghada are mostly on the water — $245 is the private speedboat to Orange Bay and Magawish Island. In the desert you ride in a convoy behind a lead guide, and that is the design rather than a compromise: the plain looks identical in every direction, and the convoy is how everybody comes back together.

Common questions
$29 at three hours, on 3,420 reviews at 4.9. It includes quads and ATVs, a camel ride and an optional barbecue. $41 is the longer alternative at four hours with a buggy as well.
Sunrise is cooler, clearer and leaves your day intact; sunset is the busier departure and the one that ends with dinner and stargazing in a camp. $15, $16 and $17 all let you pick when you book.
The listings run from two hours to four in total, and that total includes the transfer, the camel stop and, on the evening departures, the meal. The riding itself is the middle of it, not the whole of it.
All six name one, and all six mean a short ride at the camp rather than a journey. $15 describes it as a brief camel ride on its own page.
Age and licence conditions are set by the operator on each listing page and they differ between the six, so read the conditions on the listing you are booking. If the answer is no, $22 and $12 are the two calmest short bookings on this site.
Closed shoes, sunglasses and something over your face. The convoy raises dust and a helmet is provided, but the gap between the helmet and your collar is yours to solve. In the cooler months take a layer for a sunrise departure.
